WVHS Speaker Series – Steve Nicholls

November 20, 2019 @ 7:15 pm - 8:45 pm

“Community Heritage – the History and Innovations in Planning in West Vancouver”

Steve Nicholls will be our keynote speaker for November, speaking about community heritage and the history and innovations in planning in West Vancouver and why it is different from other communities.

Widely admired for his knowledge and liked for his sense of humour, Steve was directly involved in every planning issue in West Vancouver for 29 years, first as the Senior Planner and then as the Director of Planning for West Vancouver, retiring from that position in 2009. During his tenure in West Vancouver, Steve made notable contributions in planning and control that have benefitted the community today.

Steve believed the benefit of working in a smaller community is that “Planning” involves direct contact with the people affected, those people are actively involved with the planning process and that “Planning” involves all aspects of the community – development, finance, lands, parks, recreation, engineering and social planning.

Steve has a BA in Business from York University and a Master of Urban Planning from University of Toronto. He began his career in investment analysis specializing in real estate, followed by neighbourhood planning in Toronto and taking time out to travel before settling in Vancouver in 1979.
